Louder Than a Bomb
Founded in 2001, hosted by Young Chicago Authors (YCA) and featured in the 2010 movie of the same name, this two-month long (hosted every February and March) competitive poetry festival pits young poets from over 120 high schools and after-school programs against each other. Some appear as individuals, singing solitary on stage, à la the many long-running poetry slams; others appear in jam-packed little slam teams, belting out original multi-voiced poems forging together elements of spoken word, slam, hip-hop and freestyle into passionate pieces that speak truth to power and give words to feelings long pent up. The final batches are hosted at the Arie Crown to SRO crowds of teens and teachers and word-drunk hangers on.
